Public Transport System

A world-class public transport system comprising the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train network and a comprehensive network of public bus services provides easy access to all sport and non-sport venues during Games Time. The majority of the competition venues are accessible by MRT, while the others are accessible by public bus or by complimentary MRT Shuttles for ticketed spectators.

More information on public transport, including a link to a journey planner, can be found at http://www.publictransport.sg, a website run by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

Public transport in Singapore is represented by the following logo:

Mass Rapid Transit (MRT ) / Light Rail Transit (LRT) System

The MRT system forms the backbone of Singapore’s public transport system, spanning the entire city-state. It operates from approximately 06:00 hours to 00:00 hours (though hours vary between stations and on weekends/public holidays). The maximum waiting time is 8 minutes.

There are four MRT lines in operation: the North South Line, the East West Line, the North East Line and the Circle Line. The MRT system is also complemented by three Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines which mainly serve residential estates. Most stations have barrier-free access for passengers who use wheelchairs. All MRT/LRT station signs display the public transport logo as well as the appropriate MRT/LRT icon as shown above.

Ticketed spectators may enjoy up to 4 complimentary MRT/LRT rides daily using their Prepaid Companion Card or Singapore 2010 Ceremony Ticket on the day of the event. Otherwise, a stored-value ez-link Card can be purchased at an MRT Station for fare payment. In either case, the Card is to be tapped on the readers at fare gates when entering/exiting train stations as follows:

If in doubt, clients are advised to enquire at the Station Control Room.

The following is a map of the MRT/LRT system. Please note that the part of the Circle Line represented by the dotted line is still under construction.

Please call the TransitLink hotline at 1800 225 5663 or approach the Station Control Room at the station if you have any enquiries.

Public Buses

There are over 300 bus services covering all parts of Singapore. Bus services call at bus stops (typically located on the left side of the road) as well as at bus interchanges (typically located near MRT stations).

Ticketed spectators may enjoy unlimited public bus rides daily using their Prepaid Companion Card or Singapore 2010 Ceremony Ticket on the day of the event. Otherwise, a stored-value ez-link Card can be purchased at an MRT Station for fare payment. In either case, the Card is to be tapped on the readers near the doors when entering/exiting buses as follows:

Most bus services run from approximately 06:00 hours to 23:30 hours. SMRT Buses’s NightRider and Nite Owl services operate on Friday and Saturday nights and the eve of public holidays from approximately 23:30 hours to 04:30 hours until late. It should be noted, though, that operating hours vary between bus services.

Please call the TransitLink hotline at 1800 225 5663 if you have any enquiries.

Public Taxi Services

Over 15,000 air-conditioned public taxis ply Singapore’s roads. They can be flagged down 24 hours a day on most roads, with well-marked taxi stands available outside most major shopping centres and hotels. Public taxi bookings, including advance bookings, may be made by calling 6-DIAL-CAB (6-3425-222), which will automatically select the first available taxi company.

Public taxi rides can always be paid for in cash; other payment methods (e.g. credit card) may or may not be accepted, depending on the taxi company. A taxi ride from the suburban areas to the city centre costs around $10-$15.

It is mandatory for public taxi drivers to charge a fare based on the meter (with the addition of one or more standard surcharges). In the event of disputes, please contact the Land Transport Authority at 1800-CALL-LTA (1800-2255-582).

A taxi may be hailed from the side of the road as long as it is legal for it to stop. However, along roads in the Central Business District where buses ply, taxis can only be hailed at designated taxi stands and driveways of buildings from 09:00 hours to 22:00 hours from Mondays to Saturdays. It is recommended that clients who wish to hail a public taxi from a competition venue approach the Transport Desk there to ask about the nearest taxi stand.

Airport Transfer

To and from Singapore Changi Airport

When you make your hotel or tour package bookings, remember to enquire about airport transfers. Most tour packages are inclusive of transfers to and from the Singapore Changi Airport. If these details are not in your itinerary, you may want to call your hotel and arrange for transport. Otherwise, the taxi stands at the airport are abundant and well-manned by operators who will be familiar with your transportation needs.

There are several companies that provide the airport transfer service, which you can book even before you travel to Singapore, a half or full day in advance. Among them are Limo Taxi and Limousine Cab, best booked for groups of four and above. Surcharges apply for rides to and from the airport, starting at S$45.
