China's Lin Sheng clinched a hard-fought upset win in the Youth Olympic Games' cadet female individual epee fencing final this evening.

Fencing may not be not one of the sports that her country is strongest in but that did not stop the 16-year-old from beating Italy's Alberta Santuccio, the event's top seed, 9-8 to clinch the gold medal at the International Convention Centre.

The bout was so tightly contested that it ended 8-8 after nine minutes of regular play. Sheng then dealt Alberta the winning blow in the extra minute of added time before piercing the air with her screams of joy.

"I cannot say I fear losing, and just give up," Sheng said about being the underdog. "I am very happy. I did not expect to win, but after this win, I believe anything is possible."

In the day's other final, second seed Edoardo Luperi of Italy did not disappoint his supporters when he beat top seed, American Alexander Massialas, 15-11 to win the cadet male individual foil gold medal.

It was also Italy's third gold medal, out of a possible six in the individual events for fencing.
